Verizon Delivers $3 Million in Subscriber Text Donations for Haiti Relief

Making good on its pledge to get help to Haiti immediately, Verizon Wireless advanced $2.98 million in mobile donations that its customers have made to the Red Cross on Friday. Since the earthquake hit Haiti earlier this week, wireless companies have received a flood of donations via text messages. Typically, such donations can take up to three months to be delivered. But as DailyFinance reported yesterday, Verizon Wireless had been looking for a way to "get this money into the pipeline ASAP."

The 29-year-old from Louisville, Ky. learned the local Creole language and became the only full-time U.S. journalist based in the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. He is now homeless following Tuesday's earthquake.

As airlines struggle, Amtrak is trying and take a bit of their market share. Business travelers who routinely fly the shuttle -- mildly affordable, and as comfortable as can be expected -- have enjoyed wi-fi access on some airlines, but not all. Amtrak sees an opening here: It's announced plans to offer wi-fi access on Acela trains between Boston, New York, and Washington, starting in March. Amtrak's Wi-Fi will be free at first, but the carrier may impose a fee in the future.
